I'm having problems with my Mac Mini's internal DVD drive. I have a late 2009 Mac Mini running OS 10.6.8 and the DVD drive isn't reading some discs. I used a DVD cleaning disc a few months ago and it started working again but now it's not. I even tried wrapping an eyeglass cloth around a credit card and inserting it into the slot to clean it but it didn't help much.

I've read some good things about this one in the link below from LG but now I see it says you need OS 10.7.5.

I also read somewhere that if a Mac already has an internal DVD drive then an Apple Superdrive may not work.

Does anyone know if this LG DVD drive will work with my setup?

Is there another alternative that won't cost too much?

I have the Apple Superdrive and you are correct in that it will not work if the Mac came with a built in optical drive. That is what it shows on the Apple product details. I tried it with my 2011 MBP which comes with a built optical, just to see if it would read a DVD and it would not work.

The LG will work for reading and writing CD/DVDs, but it will not work for booting your mini from the 10.6 install DVD. You will have to get the internal optical drive replaced if you ever need to boot and reinstall OS 10.6.

Will the LG in the link above or another brand work with 10.6.8? It says 10.7.5 on LG's site. However I don't want to have to upgrade the operating for a DVD drive.

That's nonsense. The Apple Superdrive works with the 2009 Mac Mini. I know because I've used it with the three 2009's I've owned.

I use the same external LG optical drive with my early 2009 Mac Mini, which has Mountain Lion installed.
