external DVD drive?

I hope I haven't post this here before - sorry if I have.
I want to get a new operating system on my emac. Right now it's running on OSX 10.2. I have a retail OSX 10.4 (tiger). Emac only has a CD drive.
Question.... can I use any external DVD drive or does it have to be specifically made for macs?

You should be able to use an external DVD drive if it's connected via Firewire. Alternatively, you could try connecting via Target Disk Mode with another PowerPC Mac and installing from there...
