    Hi all,

I have an external hard drive enclosure (thunderbay 4 mini) that has it's own fan that spins constantly, even when my computer sleeps or when I eject the enclosure.

Any ideas why that might be the case? Is there a way to control power sent to it from my Mac Pro without pulling the thunderbolt cable altogether? Currently the only way to spin down the fan is to pull the cable or turn it off at the wall!

    Cheers

Apparently that model doesn't use a variable speed fan, so it is more than likely hooked up directly to power meaning that you have no control over it other that if it is plugged in or not.

    Thanks Zed.
The enclosure came with a noisy Sunon fan which I replaced with a Noctua. Since replacing the fan it is MUCH quieter, but now the fan doesn't power down when the computer sleeps, though it did before! I can't understand why. It was a simple replacement. The Sunon was 2 wire and I have them connected to the Noctua correctly. So strange.

If the replacement procedure is simple. You may try to put the original fan back it to test if the auto power down function still work properly.

I have had a moment of incredible stupidity and I must apologise.

My mac was not entering full sleep mode and therefore, the enclosure wasn't either. Now when my Mac sleeps, the enclosure sleeps as does the fans as it should.

    Thanks, sorry, and carry on!
