    Hello All:

This is my first post here at the MacRumors Forum. Please forgive my total ignorance; I originally posted this thread probably in the wrong place (Power Macs) and probably should have entered it here in "Mac Basics and Help". I need all the help I can get to back up all of my recorded music on my G4 to an external hard drive -- a 1 Tb WD "My Book for Mac" that I purchased today.

Background: I'm a professional guitarist/composer and I Have a G4 with OS 9.2 and X (and it should read that way in the title of the thread as well) that I use strictly for digital recording with Pro Tools LE. (I have never even gone online with it; at the moment am typing from a PC.) I never used the X OS because the Pro Tools LE version I purchased at the time ran on 9.2 , still does, and everything I've done with it has worked like a charm since I got the G4 back in 2003 or 2004 (my first Mac incidentally and I never have had any problems with it...at all!).

I have very ltd. knowledge of Mac operating systems; I know just the required amount of knowledge to run Pro Tools LE. Just hooked up the WD and am running the suggested tests using Norton Utilities. There seem to be some problems (already fixed by NU) but it's taking a long time to finish running the 'Media Test'.

I plan to get a new Mac sometime soon but I want to back up the files I have on my G4 before the resident hard drives start to have problems. I have two 40 gig HDs on this G4. One dedicated strictly to recording.

I have no idea whatsoever if my attempt here will even work; Being as ignorant as I am re. things Mac, I may be better off finding a Mac specialist in the area (Stony Brook, NY) and hiring him/her for advice or to do the job.

Any comments, criticisms, advice, recommendations, reviews to help me do this with minimum ordeal will be greatly appreciated. (Incidentally, I don't mind spending the necessary funds to do this correctly.)

As I have hardly any knowledge of Macs, I can be of little help to anyone here re. computers, etc. But if anyone has any electric or acoustic guitar- or amp-related questions or is looking for advice re. such, please fire away. I'll try to be of help any way I can. I've been playing since I was 12....many, many years ago.

Please allow me to thank you all in advance.

G4 OS 9.1 Appears to Work Fine with "WD My Book"

I feel Like a complete fool here.

After the initial Norton Utilities Tests ended (with NU fixing evidently some minor problems) everything appears to be working just fine. I copied one or two songs/wave files without a hitch in short amounts of time. I have just started copying the entire disks that I have in my G4.

My note here is to inform others -- who may have had the same thoughts and doubts that I had had -- about new 'USB' hard drives working with Mac G4 older OSs. This setup seems to be compatible.

As in the above entry, the thread title should read G4 OS 9.2 and X (not 9.1).

    Thank you.
