I have a 3 TB external drive, that is divided into 2 partitions. One, the one that is giving me problems was designated as my Time Machine backup drive.

  • Now TM can't write to this drive, If I try to repair using Disk Utility, it says "repair failed".
  • If I run repair on the Media Icon (the parent drive), that says it's ok.
  • If I try to remove the bad partition, I get a message that operation can't be completed because the partition will not unmount, but it is unmounted.
  • If I try to eject the properly working partition, it won't eject because "Failed to eject “WD My Book 25EE Media” because it is currently in use."
  • If I try to erase the parent drive it won't erase because "Failed to erase “WD My Book 25EE Media” because it is currently in use."
What else can I do to fix this drive? I'm going to look into using the Terminal to erase this drive in an attempt to resurrect it.
Thanks!

Update: After telling me it could not remove the bad partition, if finally decided it could and it did. Now I have divided the drive once again into 2 partitions, ran first aid (which found nothing wrong) and am going to try this again.

Anything I should try differently? Thanks!

If disk utility's first aid can't find anything wrong with it, and if the partitions currently mount/unmount as desired, I'd just "call it a temporary [but now-corrected] glitch" and keep on using it...
