I bought just the enclosure empty and installed the 500 gig drive. It's really a high quality unit, matches my system well, and works great. It came with USB, FW400, and FW 800 cables, and the power supply.

Hmac, did you see a need for a fan (even though the grille would seem to give it good cooling)? What tools are needed to put it together?

I need to add an external hard drive to my iMac for backup of business information. I don't know anything about them, so just curious what type would be best for this use, USB or Firewire? Also, are there certain brands that I need to look for that will be compatible with the Mac?

Firewire. WD MyBook Pro works great with MBP. My model is 500GB fanless = silent.

I also like the NewerTech v3 models from OWC. They have a small size, lots of inputs including a hub built-in and comes with just an enclosure or with drive. You can stack these in a fairly small space too.

I disagree. The best cases now are the ones that do usb2, ethernet, and esata. Firewire is a waste of time. Usb2 is faster and esata is nearly 4 times faster than usb2.

Disagree. FW, and particularly FW800 is substantially faster than USB 2.0. You can't boot from eSATA, so it's a poor choice for a bootable clone. My preference is for a quad interface case: FW800/400, eSATA, and USB 2.0. I have yet to see any decent ethernet implementations.

For me an ext case must be usb2 and have an on/off switch with an in built fan to cool the drive. Some newer ext cases have usb2, ethernet and esata.
..
I won't touch fanless ext cases with a barge pole. With no fan in the casing to keep it cool may result in hard drive failure. For me no fan no buy.

Disagree again. I prefer cases that are cooled via passive radiation. I don't need the fan noise, and the 3 external drives that I have of this nature don't seem to miss the fan. 2 of the cases are a couple of years old, and the drives inside are more like 4 years old. No failures.

Don't buy an external hard drive, rather buy an enclosure and a hard drive and put the two together.

Enclosures vary according your needs, but I like Western Digital GreenPower hard drives as they run exceptionally cool and quiet. (and als0 liek saev enargee 111!!!111one!!!eleven!!11)

I agree about external enclosures. I favor the OWC Mercury Elite Pro, however, with Firewire 400/800 and USB.

This is the first time that I have encountered the concept of an enclosure for hard drives. Given that my 2nd Maxtor one touch 300Gig is about to pack up on me with less than a year's use I was reading this post in the hope of finding a better alternative. The concept of an enclosure intrigues me, but what are the benefits over an external drive please?

Is this a good one? http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-301825U...ref=dp_ob_title?ie=UTF8&qid=1211768514&sr=8-1

I am new to Mac and to backing-up in general, so most of this thread is Greek to me. I just want to maintain a "clone" of my MacBook, and I want it to be reasonably quiet. :) Not sure if this is what I am looking for... thoughts?

I have the 750gb version of that drive. It hosts bootable clones of my MBP and MB, a Time Machine backup of the MBP, and my photo repository. It should be perfect for what you need.

It's Not All Good...

FWIW -- I just had a month old WD My Book studio (500 gig) fail while doing and erase and replace upgrade from Tiger to Leopard. Lost everything that I didn't have secondary (DVD) backup for. Now looking to replace with 2 500 gig externals that will be rotated weekly. Lesson here is that nothing is perfect, and redundancy is important...
