Hi, just got my new iMac today. My External HD has the old usb-c plug & the adapter I bought is not working, it's not recognizing it. I bought an Anker USB-C to USB 3. Not sure if I should just get a new Ext HD. Are there any recommendations for an adapter that would work or should I just get a new HD? Recommendations on that would be great also.

Thanks in advance!

Joanne

maybe try the apple one? I read a few reviews that 3rd party adapters didn't work so I bit the bullet and bought 2 of the apple dongles.

I have multiple hard drives and they all showed up using the apple dongle, daisy chained from 2 hubs.

Thank you, that makes sense. I’ll try that. Thank goodness Amazon makes it so easy to return.

Definitely try the Apple adapter first. That's the most cost-effective solution. If you do go for an external SSD, I've had great experiences with LaCie Rugged SSDs. They're pricey at $330 for 1TB, but they last. Reliability and style are high.

I find it odd that an external hard drive with a USBc port won't connect to the new iMac.

What make of drive is it?
What SIZE of drive is it? (2.5" or 3.5")
What is the format of the drive?

If you connect it, does disk utility "see" it?

Finally, I'm sure you did this already, but did you go to
finder/preferences/general
... and put a check in "hard disks" and "external disks"
????

Well, I didn't have that checked off but still isn't showing up, even with apple adapter. I have a WD My passport that was connected to my 2016 iMac. I may make my life easier & just get a new one.

If you're in the market for something new and want speed, I bought a Fledging Thunderbolt Enclosure and an Inland Premium 1TB SSD. I'm getting speeds nearly as fast as the built-in SSD.

I have a few WD external disks which connect to my M1 MacBook Pro using an Amazon adaptor with no problem at all. I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t work with an iMac.

Thanks all. I don't know what happened but it showed up today with the same adapter I tried before. Strange, bu glad it works. Thanks so much for all the input.
