My hard drive won't spin down even it's idle for a while. When I put my iMac into sleep, the hard drive will spin up every 15 - 30 mins and then goes back to sleep. I keep getting this message in Console while the mac was sleeping. Are they the cause of this problem? Thanks! 25/5/2016 3:44:23.813 PM syncdefaultsd[1084]: com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.coretls.client_finished.config com.apple.message.signature: tls com.apple.message.signature2: i bought 2 new external drives recently, was suprised they did not have on-off switches. they would spin up when i put my macbook pro to sleep. so...i got one of these: http://smile.amazon.com/GE-25511-Gr...1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage i let them spin down (after ejecting them), then turn the power off.
HDD from some manufactures does not sleep after a while if it is being disconnected from computer. Turning off computer would cause HDD stop spinning in moments. I think this is due to HDD firmware and controller not able to let disk spinning down and turning off entirely. I have bought a lot of WD My Passport HDD and all could auto spin down after disconnecting from computer. But you say your HDD spins up every 15 -30 min and goes back to sleep. Then I think this might relate to Mac OS X. I don't know more detail about this though.
