your one is only a bit thinner and has an all-metal enclosure. Seems pricey at 2x the cost of the standard.

It is the much thinner "Edge". G-Tech, LaCie, Seagate, and WD have these new thinner drives that use very low profile drives. For awhile, manufacturers might be able to charge a little bit more.

Along the same lines, need to buy an additional external HDD
Looking at Lacie Porsche P9233 3TB @ £150, or Lacie d2 Thunderbolt 3TB @ £250.
Same capacity, only real difference is the Thunderbolt connection on the d2
Is that worth the £100 difference?
My iMac (mid-2011) only has USB2 but has 2x Thunderbolt ports, so I'd not get the benefits of the USB3 speed with the P9233. Will need to last me a few years so want to buy the one that will be the better long term bet.
Any advice out there?

In this case, Thunderbolt because you can only expect around 40MBps with USB 2.
Ditto. You'll see 150-200MB/sec with Thunderbolt and only 40-50MB/sec with USB 2.0.
No brainer. Go with the dual interface Thunderbolt/USB3. Useful for most any computer for the next few years.
So far I am happy with Seagate GoFlex Ultraportable hard drive with USB 3.0 and will work with Thunderbolt adaptor when it comes out. I bought for 500GB for 35.00 at WalMart.

Thunderbolt adapter is already out, and has been for quite awhile.
I've shopping around too and have pretty much narrowed my decision to the
Western Digital My Passport.
I don't think this price can be beat, if so please let me know. I'm open to other suggestions.

I've been very happy with a WD My Passport and a My Book. Both are older with USB 2.0, but my MBP doesn't have USB 3.0 or thunderbolt anyway. The bloat ware went away when I reformatted for Mac. I use Time Machine with the My Book and the My Passport I use for dragging and dropping extra files.
