I am looking to get a new external SSD. I have spent quite a while looking on these forums, and have come up with the SanDisk 2TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD Gen 2x2 ($340 on Amazon) as what I think is a good candidate, but I want to make sure it will meet my needs.

We have a fairly large music collection on an aging iMac (with USB2 ports) that we want to back up and be able to transfer part of to other devices. I have a 3rd gen iPad Pro currently, and a 2021 iPad Pro on order (my family will get the 3rd gen when my new one comes in). My iPad functions as my primary “computer” most of the time. I also own a 2016 MacBook Pro (Thunderbolt 3 Ports), but that is not used frequently, although I do use it to store some music, and I use that device to move around music files on the MP3 player that I use for swimming. I have my iTunes library synced but for some reason I cannot determine, it does not seem to be sharing correctly on my MacBook (I always get an error message when I try to sign into iTunes and none of my library shows up). The slow internet connection in the boonies where I live does not help, so I’d like to transfer music files directly so I can load them onto my MP3 player.

I want a portable 2 TB SSD that can be used to move stuff between these devices, will be useable for quite a while, reliable, and won’t break the bank (which is why I’m not yet getting a Thunderbolt drive). We also have a lot of photos that I want to back up, plus a few personal documents. No enormous files - just a lot of small ones. The SanDisk drive comes with a USB2 cord, so I assume can work with the iMac, but the USB3 cord should be fine with the other devices including the new iPad, correct? Does the SanDisk seem like a reasonable choice? If not, other suggestions at a similar price point? Thanks for any help.

I'm a bit confused why you need a hard drive. Sounds like an Apple family. Sync music, Airdrop, iCloud Drive, your network for the Macs. Probably other ways as well.

Couple reasons. First, I want a non-cloud backup of music, photos and important documents. Second, iCloud is only helpful when you have a good internet connection. I live in the country. I have a crappy internet connection that is throttled further after a fairly small amount of data use. Very few options where I live. Third, I can’t use sharing on my MacBook Pro because I get an error message whenever I try. So the only thing that shows up in my library is what I actually copy to the computer.

One thing to note, which I discovered.
You cannot move any media from iPad music library/books/tv app etc into files app (which reads external drives).
So they are either in the cloud or downloaded onto your iPad.

The only native app seems to be photos, which gives the option to move to files.
Presumably numbers/pages/keynote etc will allow this, but I don't use them.
