I'm new to OS X, so please bear this in mind regarding this question.

Yesterday, I powered off my external harddrive without "quitting" it from my MBP. Now, the harddrive light is flashing and the computer won't connect to the external it.

I checked to see if the external HD is still working by connecting it to a PC and all seems fine.

The question is, what do I need to do to get the mac to connect with the external harddrive again.

Thanks 🙂

Completely turn off the external hard drive as in unplug both cables connected. Reconnect and you should be set. If not, try a restart.

Leave it plugged in for a few minutes - OSX will be doing some sort of diagnostics on it.

I notice when I plug my external hard drive in sometimes it takes up to 2 minutes to appear (although the HDD's activity light is flashing).

check to see if the harddrive appears in "disk utility".. maybe u can manually mount it in there... if not do as the others have advised
