what nice about the triple interface is that you don't have to worry about what interface they have when hooking it up to a friends computer my old computers don't have firewire so i have all three.

I got a Laser external enclosure with an 80 GB Seagate external HD. Its new. I know that 80GB doesn't sound like much, but it's really all I need, and I paid around $120 USD for both the enclosure and the external HD. :)

Yeah, I was thinking about getting that exact one. Although LaCie has that drive in another enclosure as well. It's in the one designed by F.A. Porsche, but then it only has a Firewire400 interface, and not the USB2.0 and Firewire800 ones. Is that a bad thing? I searched for both on Kelkoo and the Porsche model costs €50 less than the D2 model there (€190 against €240).

Is the D2's triple interface worth the extra €50? Also, can the Porsche model operate standing on it's side (it doesn't come with a side-stand like the D2 model)?
well, your imac 800 doesn't have fw800 so I'm not sure how having that interface helps you...

Sorry to bother you all again.

Sorry for waking this discussion from death, but I wanted to have some more help and/or suggestions.

I'm really leaning towards buying the Maxtor OneTouch II 300GB external hard disk now. Was going to get a LaCie D2 Extreme 250GB triple interface drive, but it only has 8MB cache, whereas the Maxtor has 16MB. That must help speeding up it's operation. However, the Maxtor is dual interface only; it doesn't have FW800. My current Mac doesn't have FW800, so for now it would be perfectly cool to have the Maxtor, but once I get a new Mac (probably late next year, once the iMac has gone Intel), it won't run at it's full possible speed. For maximum (future) performance, I have to get the LaCie.

So, the facts are these:
- the Maxtor drive has 16MB cache, the LaCie 'only' has 8MB;
- the Maxtor has USB2 and FW400 interfaces, the LaCie also has FW800;
- Maxtor OneTouch II drives are slightly cheaper than the LaCie D2s;
- both drives use Oxford 911/912 chipsets for their FW interfaces;
- both drives have aluminium cases, withouth a fan;
- both drives use external power supplies.

They are very close in feature sets, so which one should I get? The Maxtors are slightly bigger than the LaCie drives, although the LaCies are a tad heavier. So all in all, it won't really matter which one I go for; they're both excellent choices, I know that. It's just that I have this weird idea that Maxtor is to PCs what LaCie is to Macs. B*llsh*t, of course. Both drive enclosures look quite good too; no clue as to which one to get there either...

Well, let's put an end to this post already. Main question is this: Should I go for the Maxtor's 16MB cache or for the LaCie's FW800 interface?

Maxtor.

Okay, I got the Maxtor OneTouch II 300GB drive yesterday. Unpacking it now. Am quite curious about its looks. A computer geek in some small, local computer workshop-like store I spoke to yesterday told me the Maxtor drives are of an exceptional quality. Can't go wrong with it then, was my guess. Bought the last one at another store (the little store didn't have any anymore). They had to dig for it a while, but they actually still had one lying in the back. The drives are slowly being replaced by LaCie's there, since the OneTouch II's are EOL'd, the said. So the OneTouch III's are coming then? Oh well, this drive I got should suit me just fine...

Ah well, any more advice would be wasted I suppose. I'm sure you'll be content with that drive. I would have gone for something with FW800 purely for future-proofing. The cache I think is on the drive, so that can be changed if need be. I have a Lacie D2 and am pleased with it, but I only have a FW400 port. I'm assuming my future computer will be 800.

Has anyone actually changed the drive in a proprietary external disk like Lacies or Maxtors? I'm assuming you can get into them, and put your own disk in, but I've never tried :rolleyes:
