I connected the external hd I saw the Disk not ejected properly. What do I do?

Did the computer go to sleep mode? Don't do sleep while external drive is connected.
 
If you disconnect the external HD in the middle of a file transfer, it is possible to lose the data. Thus it is best to "Eject" the external hd before disconnecting it.
But usually there is no problem.
 
Could be a problem with the cable, or connection to the back of the drive (or iMac).
Could be a problem with the drive itself.

Did this happen after the iMac was sleeping?
Or did it just disappear while it was awake?
