external HD dumps my library into trash

I can listen to my library off my external HD but I am getting the Startup disk is almost full.
So I disconnect my external to empty the trash (reading over 1000 items) and the trash reads empty already.
If the HD is plugged in and I try to empty the trash, the trash just starts filling up with gigs of my music...
Huh? Why then does my HD fill up the trash upon connect??
