external HD partition help

I want to be able to use my 500gb external harddrive for my mac and pc, I tried this before and I partition the harddrive and it would work on the mac and backup timemachine, but it wouldn't read the other partition on the pc when I connected it, what's the right way of making this work, I want to partition 300gb for timemachine and use the other 200gb for store use on the pc.

Set the Mac partition to Mac OS X (Journaled) and Windows partition to MS-DOS (FAT32).

I did that, but it didn't work, do I just do that with disk utility? or do I do that with partition magic?

With Disk Utility. It should work. Or download HFSExplorer to your PC so it can read HFS+ and you can partition the drive
