It took just over 2 hours to partition the drive & copy all the data on & make it bootable using Super Duper.

What can I do to it for a good test after that , anyone ?

Boot from it :)
Of course , thanks ...my brain is on go slow all day now :) , time for sleep thinks me ...but yeah , I booted from it , seems fine ...the drive read/write noises seem a little loud now that I've been sat with it a while , maybe noticing them more but still ...there you go .

I have noticed a small speed boost loading web pages but I wasn't expecting massive improvements as the G3 iMac I'm on had a HD upgrade before I got it ( Maxtor 80Gb) but ye , so far so good , the grinding noise will possibly
be an issue I think when I get the new Mac and start tasking the disk with Logic and such ..hmmmm , grinding noise on read/write ?! normal or no/ anyone else got one of these or thoughts ?

EDIT > the grinding sound is happening quite a lot , ....should a drive sound like this?

The Maxtor in the iMac makes a similar noise( albeit quieter) , I put that down to age !?

Update> Nah , I think it's ok ,now I've moved the drive to another part of h desk and not in an alcove it is much quieter (obviously I hear you say !) but there is noise none the less.

Maybe just a teenee tiny bit of the dreaded new product buyer >paranoia going on !! ...

UPDATE> Boots from the drive without problem , although it takes a minute longer booting from the external ...because of the G3 maybe ??
please see update further down page >>>>

havnt got to read much here,

however i am hoping by xmas, that the 1tb external drives are even cheaper!!! =]

cheapest

Hey, I suggest you go for the cheapest. For example a western digital, or iomega. But I suggest you take one with firewire. It leaves you room for usb (which I don't have: 2 printers, "touchscreen", keyboard, 2 external harddrives). Good luck;)

Buy a seagate with an Icydock enclosure.

been looking at 1TB possibilities for weeks, and thats exactly what i'm going to do.

edit: was price comparing at newegg, and just noticed even after current icy dock rebate, that i can get the 1TB lacie poulton FW400/USB2 for about $5 less including shipping through J&R. thinking i'm going that route now

I just brought a Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus, 500GB external and can vouch for it, i have it plugged in via FW400 and transfer speeds seem incredible (coming from a PC and USB 2.0) i use it for time machine and storing all my media.

Would defiantly recommend the Maxtor, plus its got segate Hard drive inside and free 5 year warranty!

UPDATE >

I'm sending the unit back as it's turned out to be faulty :( a good thing about this is that I have ( up to now) had no problems with the customer service at GTech ....simply held the telephone receiver to the drive whilst it was ' chugging' along and the tech guy said , " turn it off , Ill send you another " all I had to do was to ring my reseller and they have sorted the rest out ...I now have to wait for GTech to send me a drive direct, with a return shipping label for the faulty drive .
So impressions : nice solid feeling/looking drive , I got a faulty one , it happens .....customer service good .
will report back with what happens.

sorry it's been a while ....

...the new drive arrived within 3 days . works fine ...it's a little louder than expected but then again this is my first external hdd so not much to go on really ...

........this thing is very solid though , provides feedback when in use, both visually & audible .

Booted from it several times without problem , each time from different partition's.
To be honest , I feel embarrassed because the service guy has tested the unit I returned & said it works fine ......... must have been me ?

If there is any test or something you'd like me to try on it?...... let me know , I'll be happy to oblige .
