Do you mean for regular backup? What version of OS X do you have?

use time machine if you have leopard, or just drag the files onto it.

If you have other things on that external and want to keep them separated, use a partition. Then, simply drag and drop.

If you're looking to backup your stuff and have nothing on the external, then just use Time Machine. If it's not in your Dock, go to System Preferences and you'll see it there. :)

yep, just drag, drop and enjoy.... if you want to back it up and have an external with nothing on it, let time machine work its magic
