External HDD's awakens for no good reason

When saving a file in any application all the External HDD's start spinning.
5-10 seconds wasted time right there.

When the iMac is sleeping. 30 minutes to 2 hours between each awakening, very annoying when you sleep in the same room. This particular problem started with mavericks.

OS X has ALWAYS done this for me, going all the way back to 10.0.0. Highly annoying.

Issue 1, I've seen too but never been bothered enough to look into why.

Issue 2, what model iMac? If recent model, uncheck System Preferences > Energy Saver > Enable Power Nap.

Had this issue sporadically. Maybe Spotlight indexing the drive?

iMac mid 2010, don't see any power nap option.
Unchecked "wake for network access" maybe that'll do.

No power nap on iMac until 2012 models. That network setting might have been it though.
