external mic with speech recongnition

hey, for some reason, my mic going through a usb soundcard wont work with speech recongnition. when i go to speech in system preferences, calibrate is ghosted out. weird, ehh?

p.s. im running tiger and my soundcard is an alesis multimix8usb

Not really...I have a BT headset and my mini doesn't want to cooperate with it to use voice recognition. I'd love to help, really, I would...but man, after the ammount of trouble it's given me I just gave up.
