External Monitor doesn't work

Hello,

I have a Macbook Pro (late 2011, Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5) and a monitor that uses VGA. I bought a mini display port to VGA and hooked everything up. The monitor turns, but doesn't recognize my mac. It just says "no signal"

Can someone help me?

1. Reseat the connector to the Mac.
2. Replace the adapter.
