I have a macbook pro retina 13” late 2014 and want to buy an external monitor for graphic design usage, please can anyone confirm a compatible monitor specification for my Mac and also confirm the best connection cable I can buy to connect the two for faster - better result. I have searched around but most of what I read isn’t clear and I just need the answer in plain English, specific to my Mac model.
Many, many thanks in advance!

The preferred connection method is to buy a Minidisplayport (Mac end) to displayport (display end) connector. It gets plugged into the thunderbolt2 port on the MacBook. (The thunderbolt port -IS- the "minidisplayport" as well -- same port)

The alternative method is to use an HDMI (or is it miniHDMI?) cable (Mac end) to HDMI (display end).

Regarding displays, a good place to start looking is on this page:
