I am trying to connect a Dell E198wfpv external monitor to my Mid 2014 Macbook Pro. I am using an HDMI to VGA convertor to hook it up. When I go to display preferences, my mac recognizes that there is an external monitor plugged in but I'm stuck with a black screen on the Dell. I have tried switching the monitor from auto-detect, analog, and digital but it still just falls into "sleep mode."

Please help!

Thanks,
Matt

Don't use an hdmi to VGA. It has to be actively converted, which is not likely the adapter you own. Use minidisplayport to VGA, which can be passively converted.

If the monitor has DVI, an hdmi to DVI will also work.

The problem is very likely due to your adapter.

I'd use something like this if you insist on using VGA.

If your monitor has digital connections such as DVI or displayport, I'd use that instead.
