external monitor on mid 2011 27 iMac

my apple cinema display connected to my mid 2011 27 has gone snafu so looking to replace. Question, what would people recommend 30" max and can this iMac drive a 4k display.

That iMac cannot drive a 4k display. At this point only the 5k retina iMac can drive a 5k display (its internal one). As for a replacement the Dell 2713H is a good choice. A couple people have them at my office and like them. There is also the cheaper 2713HM which is 8-bit instead of 10-bit and has not quite as nice of a backlight, but is still a good monitor.
