For a long while, my Samsung external monitor has been working nicely connected to an iMac, but suddenly nothing shows on the external display. The thing is, macOS of the iMac does recognize the external monitor, and the Samsung monitor shows up in the Mac's System Preferences/Displays. It's just that nothing appears on the external screen. Any ideas?

How about the monitors "internal" settings?
Could something have changed?
Do the display's controls offer a "factory reset" to default settings?
I'd try that.

Could the monitor's internal backlight have failed?
How old is it?

Thanks. Because the monitor screen is totally off - even though it is recognized by macOS - I can't operate anything on the screen such as re-setting to default.

I got it 2nd hand, so maybe it could be old.

How about if you disconnect it from the Mac, then turn it on and try to access the on-screen controls?

I'm thinking that if it won't even do that, it might have suffered a hardware failure...

Thanks. Strangely, that worked.

I disconnected it from the Mac, and then pressed the manual buttons on the monitor, and it sprung back to life.

It's odd that those buttons did not operate when it was still connected to the Mac.

Seems to be no logic in that, but it got it working again.
