I have a macbook pro, mountain lion. I also have an external DELL monitor. I wish to connect the external monitor to my mac. I have succeded in doing so before by using the same adapters and cables. But whats new is that the screen on the monitor now stays black. According to my mac, the monitor is connected, but there is no picture. Hence I do not think the problem lies in the cables. Any idea what I can do?

Thanks

Try going to preferences-> displays.
Adjust resolution (i.e.- try different options).

If your monitor has multiple modes or doubles as a television, ensure it is set to the correct one (VGA, HDMI, etc.)
