The Apple Superdrive says it's for all notebooks that didn't come with a built in optical drive originally. Can I still use an external optical drive if my MBP came with a built in optical drive? My plan was to purchase an external optical drive and use that until I have the time to replace the onboard optical drive. The A1226 came with two USB 2.0 ports.

The Superdrive can be cantankerous because it doesn't work with all Macs.

Solution:
Buy a 3rd-party USB external DVD/CD drive (or CD/DVD/Bluray).
They're cheap and work with all Macs.

Re the LG drive referenced in reply 3 above:

Reviews on amazon seem mixed.
Some users like it and give it 5 or 4 stars, others don't (say it won't work).
Sometimes I think this is "more the user" than it is "the drive".
Before you commit to it, check out some others as well.
Can you find any USB Pioneer drives?

I have followed tech product advice from this website for both cheap items (USB memory sticks) and expensive items (4k monitor). I regard it as reliable as long as you keep in mind that it makes money through affiliate links.

Specific to your situation, here is how it handled testing external optical drives:
"All drives we tested were detected by Windows 10 and macOS 10.15 Catalina without our installing any additional software, and the operating systems’ built-in disc reading and burning features worked without requiring any extra drivers or configuration."
