Yeah, keep it on all the time or just have it suspend.

That way you can 'turn it on' (ie wake it up) from mouse movement/keyboard use.

Too unreliable. Sleep in lid-close mode frequently fails.

Yeah, mine almost never sleeps in closed mode. It always wakes up when I close it, and then is burning like hell when I open it again.

you could get a REALLY thin paperclip and slip it in there and try and press the power button every time you wanna start the computer 😛. Personally... I'd just flip the lid up for a few seconds to hit the power button and then resume working w/ the lid closed.

No, make it 'sleep' after x minutes of inactivity. Its not about if the lid is closed or not.
