I've always had the official Apple 27" displays and they've typically lasted as long as my Macs, so 3 years+, so over that period of time the cost isn't as bad, but I agree, its still a big chunk to outlay on a monitor, let alone two!

I don't do any professional photography or graphics work, I just like a nice big screen when working from the home office with my laptop in clamshell mode. I have recently started doing some video work in 4K with a go pro for one of the companies I work for, so that's why I've gone for this 4K LG. I didn't think the difference between the MBP screen and a normal HD monitor would be great, but boy, its massive, even just on the clarity of text.

I'm, sure I might end up with a 5K LG screen at some point, but am being semi-sensible for the time being! This screen should let me use it as a USB hub and charger for my 13" laptop, I'm hoping the charging issue is just on the 15" model.

For those in the UK, PC World Business have the LG screens in stock today.

some very good points but in my thinking it would be 980 for 2 4K and i would need to get some kind of hub to charge my 15 inch(which is annoyingly sitting at my gfs in Houston and i am in Scotland) and that hub looks like over 300 so only paying 300 for the 2x5k displays...

ahhhh it would be easier if i just couldnt afford the 5ks!!!!

That's a good point about the 2 * 4Ks cost. If I had more desk space I'd be tempted, but one 27" screen is more than enough for me!

The LG screen has shipped, so will see how it is when I get back tomorrow night.

I have an interesting update here on the LG 27UD88-W. To rule out one factor, I ordered some USB C cables off Monoprice. I changed the cable out from LG with the Monoprice one, and voila! Charging works fine!!!!! I went the whole day at work using only this cable for charging and my battery was at 100% at the end of the day.

Foss, do you have a 15" or 13" MBP?

Looks like the price of the LG 27UD88-W display has gone up on several websites now...

The LG 5K screen looks very nice and the built in speakers, webcam look great. The really annoying thing is the fact you cannot input anything else though, really frustrating. I like to mess about with servers, Raspberry Pis etc but no way to plug any of those in.

Nice one. Glad you got that fixed.

What sort of cable did you order - just a standard USB-C one? I have a spare Apple USB-C charging cable so was wondering if that would do the trick.

I know there was some massive hikes last week from suppliers in Europe who had them in stock as the supply in the UK was non-existent. There were some on Amazon charging an extra £300-£400 over the previous price.

LG have obviously made a small shipment and some of the bigger companies in the UK have got some again, so you should be able to get one without paying over the odds.

Not got much time before heading out but have hooked the LG screen up just to test it. Screen quality is very nice indeed, the colours pop, there's so much brightness and the level of detail and clarity in photos and text is just stunning.

I'm using it with a 13" non-touchbar MBP and its charging the MBP from the monitor with the supplied USB cable. The monitor also has a couple of traditional USB ports in the back and a headphone jack for speakers, so you end up with the single USB-C cable to plug-in which is a very tidy solution. With my previous MBA and Thunderbolt Display, there were the multiple cables to plug in which was a bit of a faff at times.

Delighted :)

The spare USB-C cable from Apple did not work for me plugged into the monitor. I've been told that cable is only really good for charging and not for high data transfer rates with charging. The cable provided by LG works for 4K@60 but not for charging.

I have the same MBP and I'm considering purchasing this display. How's the performance? Did you try running several tabs on browser plus Spotify or 4k video?

Performance is fine. To be honest I didn't think twice about it - in the short time I used it last night I had multiple tabs in Safari while playing music and using iMovie with some 2.7k and 4K GoPro footage and everything was nice and smooth.

15"

Um not according to this video.

So the mark surrounding one of the ports also charges(a little slower) from that port!

My comments have all been regarding the LG 27UD88-W, not either Ultrafine.

I just received my tbMBP 13" and an LG 27UD88 (4K 27" with USB C TB3 connection), quite happy about both, but a strange thing happened : the display is working perfectly with the provided USB C cable, but as it was a bit short for my set up, bought a 2 meters belkin USB C TB3 cable (in an apple store), and it does not work with this Belkin cable..
The display is not recognised by the MBP apparently, and the display does not receive any signal.

Anybody encountered a similar issue ?

Great thread - so I picked up a 15" new Tb MacBook Pro over the weekend. Opted for the LG 27UD88 as the marketing spin says it would do 'single cable connection'.

Easy to set up, BUT does not charge (or even retain power) for the MacBook Pro. IMO just not enough juice coming through. Apple USBC doesn't either nor does 3rd party option.

I'd have expected a slow charge given the output of the display and the power needs of the MacBook but I'm getting nothing.

There's a lot of contradictory reports about this. I'm sure it is supposed to charge the MBP and it's probably an issue with the cables. Did you try the one boxed with the display?

Yes and Apple and Belkin
[doublepost=1480542140][/doublepost]The other thing that's odd is I'd say the MBP actually loses battery charge quicker whilst using the display over using it stand alone...

The laptop is having to put effort in to driving the big 4K display, hence there will be drain on battery.

Ah. Good point. So, final solution before requesting a return is to try two other USB C's that others have praised. Will see how that goes tomorrow.

Have tested this now and in my case the LG monitor with their cables retains charge in the MBP (15") but doesn't charge it. I need to try another cable, the Monoprice ones seem to work but don't seem to be available in the UK yet.

Thanks for the update on that. I've now tried charging my MBP Tb 15" with Apple charger to 100%, then using the display and USB C to see if it would, at least, not lose charge. But no such luck for me. I've a couple of other cables coming tomorrow, as you say Monoprice not available in UK at the moment.

Which cables did you go for? The more I look at USB-C cables the more it becomes apparent that you need to be careful not to end up with something which could fry your kit! There is a published list of cables which do meet the USB-IF standards available now as well!
