external speaker issue

I'm trying to plug external speakers into my headphone jack, but sound keeps coming out of my pc speakers only..what am I doing wrong?

Headphones don't work either and the speakers do work elsewhere (tried my ipod)

It does seem like your headphone jack might have a problem. If you can, check it out with a third device. If this too does not work then it most probably is the headphone jack.
