Good morning all.

I am contacting you today following unsuccessful research and to ask for your help if you are luckier or more knowledgeable.

I recently replaced my original 250GB SSD for a new 1TB on my iMac19,1. Now I would like to use this old hard drive externally. To my surprise, I couldn't find a box or adapter that would allow me to do this, either by USB or Thunderbolt connection.

Do you have any idea how this could be done?

Should I despair and turn to another alternative or everything suggests that one day such a box will see the light of day?

Thank you very much.

Which model iMac? If it's a blade SSD you need an enclosure designed for that SSD. I think OWC sells such an enclosure mainly for those who are replacing the blade SSD in a laptop but I think the iMacs used the same form factor SSD.

Thanks, i edited my post since I forgot to speak about the model. I've contacted OWC about such an enclosure and they don't sell it nor could find one...

As old Mac SSDs are of low storage capacities (128GB/256GB), it's simply not viable much as external storage.
Same things happen with the stock 1TB 2.5" HDD. People tend to throw them away after upgrading to 2TB SSDs.

To use the Apple SSD as external storage, you will need 2 items:
1. An adapter to convert the Apple SSD to normal SATA connections. This was popular for a while, then it became rare.
2. An USB 3.0 enclosure. This is more available.

If the above is too low-end to you, then go for the whole USB box in the link below.

P/S: Check carefully the version of Apple SSD you have (12+16pins or 17+7pins)

The SSD to SATA adapter is only compatible with this: "Only support for 2012 Apple 2012 Apple MacBook Pro A1398 A1425 MD212 MD213 ME662 MC975 MC976 ME662 ME664 ME665 ad MacBook Air A1466 A1465 MD223 MD224 MD231 MD232 SSD to 7 + 15 pin SATA. " Which is not at all related to the product I described.

For the USB box, it could be a potential product.

Have a great day

Looking at the cost of some of these external enclosures that can accept a proprietary Apple SSD, it may not be worth it...

I'm quite disappointed by the price too... AND the lack of options in 2021. After contacting the manufacturer who wasn't sure if his enclosure would work for my SSD, I opted for a workaround. I had two goals for this project, and the main one was to recover my data that hadn't been correctly saved before I changed my SSD. I will now just open again my iMac and re-do my backup by replacing my ancient SSD...

I don't think i'm going to buy another iMac soon.
