I bought a SATA to eSATA converter plate for external storage to take the place of using a FW800 drive. I did it for two reasons; first the speed eSATA is just faster in both benchmarks and real terms, second it frees up my FW800 port for networking. Then a few days ago I stumble on a USB 3 card for not too much money. I could pop out the eSATA and put the USB 3 in it's place. What says MR?

I say do both. I have the Caldigit x4 lane FASTA-6GU3 card with (2) eSATA and (2) USB 3.0 ports. It's bootable and also allows you to hot plug drives. I really love it.

If you don't want to spend that kinda money on a combo card, stay with eSATA.

I probably should have said this at the beginning..

I have a 4 port SATA 2 RAID card, with only two used, thats where I had planned to get the extra SATA ports from.

    esata > usb X

USB is driven by your host machine's CPU. bear that in mind.
