I've been searching and researching about small monochrome LCD's lately because I want to create a small, external ticker that can display things like my Mail status, iChat status, iTunes status, Date and Time, a news ticker, stock ticker, etc...

The only three promising leads I have found so far are:
- http://home.sandiego.edu/~epooch/cgi-bin/blosxom.cgi/tech/leds

There also is this product for PC's: http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/avcards/7e3e/

So far, Phidgets is looking to be the best for me because I know Java, so coding it myself wouldn't be a problem, but it's very pricey. Next would be the project by Eric, but until he has another group buy, I'm out of luck.

Does anybody have any more information about creating a Mac-compatible external USB LCD kit or perhaps a company that sells one pre-built?

I just posted a thread about keyboards and I think this might be pretty close to what you are looking for http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/optimus-mini/

Of course they work as keys also, and it will run you up a hundred bucks.

I've seen it. I'll wait to see how it goes, but I have a feeling the software part of the system won't be very good. We'll see. If it's good enough, maybe it would be a better buy indeed.
