I just took in my new 2008 MacBook Pro (using PPC Macs for early Intel again) and my AirPort seems to have failed. It shows that there is an AirPort card in the computer, but when I click "Turn AirPort On" nothing happens. Tried using a few Oses and it's the same issue.

Does anybody know of an external WiFi solution that is OS X compatible? I had a Linksys USB WiFi adapter for PC that worked excellent, but I lost it at some point. Would one of those work? Does Mac OS X read them fine?

I experienced this problem with a MacBook and used a similar device as a substitute. It didn't work very well with the campus Wi-Fi system and there were other issues. Eventually I replaced the internal Airport card and for me that proved to be the best solution.

Thanks, I'll try one of these out.

I recommend getting an Ethernet to wireless bridge. I use one with my Power Macs. No drivers required.

Hi,

Late to the party here - I have a 2008 MacBook with nonfunctioning Wi-Fi.

Not sure which version of the OS.

If I understand correctly, I can use one of just these USB to WiFi adapters, yes?

Thanks.

Not sure which but IIRC 2008 MacBooks shipped with leopard

Per the link, you’ll need to run at least 10.6 snowleopard. IIRC most 08 MacBooks came installed with 10.5 leopard so you’ll need to see which version of OSX you have on that machine. It may have been updated, it might not have been - go to the upper left corner of the screen & click on about this Mac & it will tell you what version you are running.

I'd go for an Edimax. They are less clunky and very cheap and there's driver support starting from Tiger ...
