Extra Memory for New IMac

I want to get a new imac i5. Seems like the best thing is to buy the memory somplace else and fit it myself.

So can someone tell me what type of memory and where is the best place to buy it?

Apologies for the noob question. But If i buy a 4gb i5. How many spare memory slots do I have in my machine?
