I previously ripped a TV series and didn't include the subtitles. I now wish to include them (not a .srt file but the idx/sub) without having to spend the time to re-encode all the discs. Then I can simply mux them, with the mp4 files I already have, into mkv containers.

I know this is easy to do on Windows but am stuck on how to extract them on a Mac.

I've found 2 answers online, both of which use Avidemux, which I have installed, but I do not get the same menu under Tools which both these answers show. When I click on Tools, I only have the options on the attached pic; not those depicted in the avidemux answers (see youtube vid -
).

So does anyone know of another way that I can extract the subtitles please, so I can simply mux them with my existing mp4 files?

Just to make it clear you already have the idx/sub files? If you do then why not use MKVtoolnix?

Edit: I must have looked over that last paragraph. Anyway, you probably have an Avidemux version installed > 2.5.3 or 2.5.4. After some digging in the Version history / Release notes / Changelog, I found this in the 2.6.0 section : Removed VOB to VobSub, VobSub to srt, and TS to srt subtitle tools. So you need to install 2.5.3 or 2.5.4 and follow the instructions on the link. I briefly tested this on Mavericks with version 2.5.3 and the Tools --> VOB --> VobSub item is there and working.

It was very kind of you to reply in such detail; I thank you and apologise for delay in response. There has been a crisis in the family so hobbies were suspended.

I acted upon your suggestion and now remember that I did try to install the earlier versions (both 2.5.3 and 2.5.4) and for some weird reason, they won't run on my lappy. And yet 2.6 does run.

As I've no idea why this is so, I've joined the forum on http://avidemux.org and posted my query. Hopefully someone may have an answer.
