Hi again everyone,
I finally bought my new 8 plus 256gb. Got a yellow tinted screen. The reseller here in India does not consider that a defect. Anyways made peace with it.
My new issue that I am facing with the device is regarding extreme battery drain overnight. I restored from a backup after updating to 11.2.1. Tested it for three days now. I charge it to 100 % at night and leave it on standby. By morning its at 55%. Could not decipher much from battery usage statistics. Next day I switched off the wifi and deleted Facebook and youtube, the common culprits. It was at 65% in the morning. Today I have reset all settings and will check again tonight. But my initial experience during the day is not very promising. Also I feel the drain while using it in the day is not too bad. It all happens when its on standby.
Needless to say Background refresh has been off throughout. Mail is set to fetch manually. No automatic updates etc. location services off. Still the overnight drain.
The thing is I used the same backup on my iphone X which I used for 3 days before selling it due to eye strain issues. It did not face the same battery drain.
Also i normally get 3 to 4 bars of signal at my home but it is the same for my wife’s phone which performs ok. Also did not have this issue on my earlier iphone 6 at the same location but that was before ios 11. Maybe ios 11 did something. I did an OTA update before restoring. Is there a way I can reinstall a fresh ios copy via itunes and then restore from the same backup? Is it worth a shot?
I am at a loss to understand this. Please share your ideas. Extremely disappointed with my experience with Apple this time round.

How fast does it drain while in use? 10% per hour or so?
Yes approximately. I kept a watch while safari browsing. Discharged about 1% every 5 to 6 minutes. Which is 10 to 12% an hour.
[doublepost=1513797175][/doublepost]Forgot to mention, just before I got my X, I updated my old iphone 6 which I was using then to ios 11. I think I remember seeing similar overnight drain on it once. I got the X the next day and forgot all about it.

The first 7 plus I got last year had a similar problem. First few weeks I had it it was fine. Then the overnight standby drain was bad. Not as bad as you are experiencing but too much drain for being in standby. I tried all the tricks I could, deleted certain apps, airplane mode overnight, DFU restore. While use during the day the drain oddly seemed less but still not at an acceptable level. I eventually gave up and took it into Apple store and they gave me a new phone. Their diagnostics revealed no battery issues but there were multiple crash and reboots of the phone occurring. It is odd because I never thought that was happening as in the morning I never had to re-enter my passcode, I was able to use touch ID.

Anyways it might be a hardware issue and might need a replacement.

Unfortunately replacements here in my country for such an issue is unheard of.
In the mornings when I compare the battery usage screenshots from last night, it shows usage of around 1 hr and few minutes while the phone was in standby. This difference of 1 hour is not explained from the usage breakup of apps. It’s something happening in the background.
[doublepost=1513799318][/doublepost]I have ios 11.2.1 right now. I want to try and reinstall a fresh copy of the ios via itunes and then maybe try and use it as new or restore from a backup of my older ph. Can someone please tell me the steps to reinstall a fresh copy of 11.2.1 via itunes.

See below link, essentially when you restore in DFU mode you are restoring back to factory settings. I would do a DFU restore and test for a few days and see of there is any difference before restoring from an older backup

https://ios.gadgethacks.com/how-to/put-iphone-x-iphone-8-iphone-8-plus-into-dfu-mode-itunes-0180057/
Well, I kept DFU as a last resort because I was under the impression that its risky. Also where can I get the ipsw file for my device? Is it available on Apple’s website somewhere?

The risky part I am aware of is you have to remember DFU will totally wipe all data from the phone so you should have a proper backup either an itunes or icloud backup if you want to restore to in the future. With respect to the ipsw file if I recall once you contact the device to itunes and go through the DFU process it will pick the correct ipsw file for your device.

You could do a reset all content and settings first and then just test the phone out without restoring from a backup as well first instead of doing the DFU. Keep in mind this will wipe all data so make sure to do a backup

Give it a week, I also restored from backup, standy is great on the X now. Since you are also from India, have you noticed any difference in battery life when using different carriers? I am using Vodafone 4G, and it seems considerably worse than Jio LTE/ Airtel LTE.

Hi bro...
Last night i put both the iphone 6 and the 8 plus side by side fully charged. After 2 hours I checked, the 6 was fine. The 8 plus already showed unexplained usage and was down to 97%. The only difference was the 6 was without a sim and the 8 plus had an airtel sim. After that I put both phones on airplane mode. By today morning both had further dropped 2% each. But my 8 plus was at 95 compared to 65 from the previous night. Does that mean the airtel cellular strength or carrier settings are at fault? But the iphone 6 with the same sim performed well but only until I updated it to ios 11. Saw the same trend on it after ios 11.
[doublepost=1513833723][/doublepost]What can be done to further improve this? Any thoughts? But still the 2% drop in 4-5 hrs standby on airplane mode is not in line with the stellar battery life others are getting.

Must be with something with iOS 11 only. I am not sure as well, but give it a couple of days. A hard reset after a software update normally fixes some issues.

Whatsapp is a big drainer for me, seems to keep doing something in the bg despite BG refresh and location off.
Have you reviewed your location settings? Even in airplane mode, location can drain battery.
Settings - privacy - location (check for apps using it) - system services, check for system location like frequent locations/ improve maps/ analytics/ motion calibration etc. Heavy drinkers those.

If you live in a poor coverage area then the phone tries harder to connect to a network. Which will drain battery faster. There could be things related to iOS 11 but the best option for you to erase all content and settings and then set up the device as new and observe if you still face the same problem after a few days. You must also have a return policy in India. If you’re not satisfied then return the device and buy another.

All of these already off...

No such return policy here... actually here iphones are sold through resellers , not Apple’s own stores. They did not exchange for the yellow tint issue as well.

I have several friends who got phones changed coz it had problems. I myself got a battery and earpods replaced under warranty for iPhone and speakers and display unit for my rMBP under warranty, both cases no questions asked. Happy with the customer service here.

Are you in India?

Doubt it.

Anyway, reset all settings.

Don’t touch any setting.

Check what happens.

If that fails try a DFU restore without restoring.

Yup, I am in India, never had a problem with apple service for products under warranty, no questions asked repair / replace has always been the case so far.

You’re the only one who said that. I’ve heard from people that the support in India is not as good.

Well, at least my experience was good, also a couple of my friends. Maybe it doesnt reflect the trend as such.

Which city? Which Service Center?

Bangalore and Chennai, at Imagine Store (Apple dont have their own stores yet in India, these are authorised resellers).
