I have owned an iPhone 13 Mini since it was introduced over a year and a half ago, and I have been very happy with it. Battery life has been acceptable since I bought it, even considering it is a Mini. Current battery health is 93%, which is not bad considering how long I have owned it and how heavily I use it. Not using this phone, or any other previous phone, never drained the battery to a significant extent, if at all.

However, since I recently updated the phone to iOS 16.5, the battery life has gone downhill fast, even for an iPhone Mini. It is now draining when not being used, including overnight. The last straw was this afternoon which I used it very sparingly, if at all, for just over 4 hours, and over 50% of the battery discharged. I have owned 4 different iPhones since 2013, and I have always kept up with iOS updates (with the exception of iOS 11, which I hesitated on updating for several months), and I have never dealt with sudden battery drain after the iOS update.

Has anybody else had this problem with iOS 16.5 using any iPhone model? I did just update most of the apps, and I will reboot the phone, hoping that helps the situation. I do figure there will be another update soon, and that may also help the issue.

What does battery usage have to say?
Is any particular app the culprit?

I just checked. At least some of the culprit may be the home and lock screen, like it was staying on when I thought it was off. I know that would tend to drain the battery.

If anybody is interested, the act of updating most of my apps, and the rebooting my phone seemed to have stopped the battery “leakage”. Battery life seems to be more or less back to normal for this phone. I did notice that most of these apps were last updated on 5/18, which was on or about when 16.5 was released. Next time I install a major update, I will not take for granted that I won’t have to take these steps.

Glad to hear you’ve resolved this!

I’ve not noticed nor experienced your plight before you resolved but I’m constantly checking for APL updates - even if it’s automatic.

Still glad to know.

Upon further reflection after another two days, I would have to say that I have "mostly" resolved the leakage issue. The battery leakage seems to be lower than it was after the changes described in my previous post, but I still notice more leakage than I had before 16.5, although this observation may be subjective. And yes, I do realize that iPhone Mini's are not known for their stellar battery life, so maybe I am just noticing it more than before. However, I suspect that it will still take another iOS update to further improve this issue.

All my devices are showing noticeable less battery life since the update.

Before waiting for another iOS update. I would heavily suggest Clearing RAM on your iPhone.

For certain performance will be gained but I’m guessing this’ll help with battery life/performance.

See if this helps. Compare with full charge before and after clearing ram.

One thing I’ve noticed since iOS 12 was that webpages in Safari and ALL other browsers will constantly try to refresh when going back to an open tab - EVEN with no data connection established/present (mobile/Wi-Fi). Something that has constantly annoyed me while travelling in Toronto’s TTC Subway system where it takes an annoyingly 5-7mins not just to connnect to your Gr public Wi-Fi , only available at the stations, but to pass the agreement and ads to authenticate - and you cannot do this until the train stops. By the time the train comes to a full stop, opens doors, on/off-board passengers and leaves it’s less than 5mins EVEN in rush hour. Onyl 1 carrier paid the extreme dollars to work through the subway and another is months away from approval. Grrrr. So testing with Safari closed may show some gains - bookmark or add to reading list tabs you’ll come back to more than 24hrs later and close safari to see how that helps - and before and after clearing RAM.

Oh one more thing. Limit what isn’t needed to know your GPS location as well. Bank apps (unless you’re travelling and need to find a location within the app or just use maps directly.

Cheers.
