ExtremeTech thinks iMac Retina does 5K @ 30Hz

How about another twist.. What if Apple is using AMDs Free Sync tech to strobe the backlight at 30hz. In this case, you won't notice any stutter at all and it could appear to be smooth.

All those vsync tests don't appear to be compatible with Safari. I know Safari and Chrome use the same rendering engine but why not include that in the list of working browsers. idk

It has been said that when using a gsync monitor (windows only and nvidia only) that even when a game dips to 30fps, it can appear to be smooth because the backlight isn't flashing at twice the speed.

If the backlight is flashing at 60hz and the panel is running at 30hz then it will appear to stutter, as we all now.. just a thought.

EDIT:
https://frames-per-second.appspot.com/
run all three objects at 60fps and see how it looks. taking a video might work just fine as the stuttering is hard to miss. Be sure to turn off motion blurring as well. Even to the untrained eye and without looking at graphs of lines that indicate stuttering, you will surely see it if the monitor is not correctly vsynced or is not running at exactly 60hz. Even as low as 2ms off is considered stuttering and can be visually seen in fast moving scenes, hence why gsync needs its own CPU processing board. 2 ms of stuttering can result in an effective 61hz refresh rate and will not line up with a monitors 60hz refresh rate. I know a lot of people here don't mess with this stuff but in Windows we have means to limit frame rates and we have the option to limit frame rates and sometimes setting the value to 59FPS can improve stuttering on a monitor that has a very high response time.

I guess no one has tried this yet?

No-one needs to. The riMac is clearly 60Hz.

If you wind the settings up in a game at 5k you can get the fps down to 30Hz, and it's choppy. At normal settings in a lot of the games I play it runs happily at 60Hz 5k, very smoothly indeed.

I like the comment underneath about the refresh rate tester from the designer. lol I would hope everyone knew this already that "VALID" doesn't mean it's running at 60hz. That's is why I sent a link to another test...
Sorry, I missed your point. The instructions are clear: take a photo after you see "Valid" and look for gaps. No gaps=no frame skipping. Are you still doubting that it's running at 60Hz?

Not doubting, just commenting on the designers post. People were posting pictures of the word "valid" and that was it. lol
