Why are you walking inside? Are you paying in cash?

Anyways,I refuse to download an app or join a loyalty program just to use contactless payments. That's idiotic. And navigate to the app on the AppleWatch? In the stupid jumble of apps where you can't see or find anything? Dock is already full. No thanks. That takes longer than just swiping my card.
I call bs humbug.

Just say: "Hey Siri, open Speedpass."

Some people.

Note: to me the idea of being forced to use speedpass and have a separate EM credit account is unattractive, esp given that EM products are often the most expensive.

I prefer the simple approach of Meijer's where their reasonably priced gas can be paid for directly at the pump without some special app or credit account, but billed to your preferred credit card using Apple Pay.

I understand. I was only addressing the second part of this comment.

I think part of what delays this is spending money for one or two devices inside at the register, vs. twelve or so new devices out at each pump. I'm not defending it, I'm just speculating why this is happening.

I agree with your speculation.

You don't have to sign up for the loyalty program to use this app to pay. It is entirely optional.

You are probably right it may be a bit faster to just swipe, but by using the app with Apple Pay, they don't have my real CC number so it protects me from fraud. Holiday Inn recently had a malware compromise, so anybody (like me) who used their CC at a Holiday Inn had new cards issued as a precaution. It is a big hassle I would rather avoid.

Having been the victim of credit card fraud more times than I care to remember, this is an excellent point, thank you. I need to remind myself of this and try to more aggressively seek places that allow Apple pay.

I'm not following you. Bs humbug? Siri sucks for me. It's slow and rarely achieves the desired task on the first try.

It's good to know it isn't necessary to join a loyalty program. I never join them anyways. Not at grocery stores, not at gas stations, and I'm even dumping FF programs in favor of simply flying the schedule and airline I wish. It beats any of the eroding benefits of these thinly veiled loyalty programs.

Anyway, another app in the payment system is just another possible point of exploit. I want fewer, not more.

Seems like waving my keyring (with its speedpass dongle) at the Pegasus on the pump is much easier than starting an app.
Agree , when I tried the new features , it would not work , and after 2 or 3 attempts , my account was locked . Had to call Exxon twice to get them to unlock it and be able to use , not fun

The one thing missing from this update is the ability to use as a complication on the Apple Watch. You have to actually tap on the app icon to use this on the watch.

A nearby Chevron recently "upgraded" their pumps with color LCDs and speakers. I assume that they're using them for ads—I find the displays annoying, so I haven't paid much attention—so they may be recouping some of the expense.

I suspect that gas stations aren't rushing to add Apple Pay to pumps because their margins are so thin. They make their money by selling stuff inside, which is where Chevron typically supports Apple Pay.

Finally an oil company can track my movements throughout the country.

I tried the whole Apple Pay via Speedpass thing on my iPhone last year. It works okay, definitely not as easy as going to one of the two Marathons in my town that have brand new pumps with NFC baked right in and tapping my Watch or iPhone. (My town is home to Marathon HQ, although Marathon seems to be silent on if they're pro-NFC or not. We've had two new stations built in the last two years. One with NFC, one without....)

That, and my local Mobil seems to constantly be in the news for armed robbery or a stabbing...

I'm waiting for Costco to get NFC rolled out at all of their gas stations, as that's my primary gas station. I saw NFC on a pump that was upgraded to support EMV (chip), but neither feature was enabled yet. So I know they're planning NFC. I hope.

The franchise Hy-Miler, who runs the two BP stations in my town have ripped all mention of BP out and now have Exxon and Mobil branding up. The one BP had NFC inside (but ancient pumps from 1998), so hopefully they'll retain NFC.

Shell would be nice, but they're still riding the CurrentC (now Chase Pay) boat, even after it sunk and crashed into the floor of the ocean.

Yes - that's what I do and it takes a fraction of a second. The app sounds pretty clunky, although not as bad as having to go into the store.

The app only uses location services when the app is open. You can see this in the privacy settings of your phone if you have the app installed.
I wasn't talking about gps. It tracks you through payments. They know what you buy. They know where you buy.

That is not any different than if you use a credit card. Like AlliFlowers mentioned, the only way to avoid that is to pay cash. Are you really that concerned Exxon knows where you bought fuel?

Agree. And my purchases from other merchants, especially specialty shops, say a lot more about me than where I buy gas, which everyone who drives a non-electric vehicle needs. I feel a lot safer buying by credit card than I would using cash.

I don't want Exxon to know where I am. I don't think my bank sells information about my buying history and location but I can see Exxon 100% do that. It's the biggest motivation behind the app anyway.
