imo, this looks like a step back for elgato. i understand removing FW for USB only, but removing mpeg4 hardware encoding is a bad move. also, it's smaller, but now you probably have a power brick or another powercord since it isn't powered by USB.

refurbished at $200, the eyeTV 200 is still the better buy...but there probably won't be anymore refurbs of the 200...

hmm, so is the 200 better? i got the 200 about a week and a half ago. i really like it. but should i try to swap it in for the 250? i like that the 250 has hardware encoding, but is the FW and mpeg-4 that much better?

Its too difficult to tell just by specs on paper. It will probably be better to wait from reviews when eyetv250 finally ships. One thing is for certain, 250 has to be plugged in via power adapter since its usb now...whether thats better or not is entirely up to you.

As far as mpeg-4 goes, I highly doubt you will miss it given that its an analog signal that goes in and you can export if need be.

I was really excited about the EyeTV 250, but really think the loss of mpeg 4 hardware encoding is a bit of a loss, but what I would have loved is the ability to encode in h.264... so lets hope we see the EyeTV 250 suppder dupper edition soon! LOL

I admit of you capture anything from TV the quality will already be compromised, but for me its about the file size as well.

Eyetv 200 also has hardware encoding. The only reason I'd switch to eyetv 250 is if you plan to play video games because the eyetv 250 has zero latency. However if you don't plan to play games I'd stick with what you have.

yeah, no game playing. i only have a PS2 and its hooked up to a TV. and if i ever get a good enough TV to plug in my mac mini DVR set up then it will likely have a second input that i can plug the PS2 into.

not to mention the RCA inputs on the 200, i havent seen anywhere that says the 250 has RCA inputs. with the RCA inputs i can convert VHS to DVD for my family (if i ever feel like doing that!! heh)
