How will the shutoff affect HD tuning? Will there still be OTA transmissions after this?

Yes there will still be free OTA--better than ever, in fact: that's the GOAL of the shutoff. To shut down the old low-quality broadcasts and switch to high def.

HDHomeRun Stream Videos

Anyone know if you can stream other types of videos besides what is recorded using the HDHR?

I would like to play movies (mpegs) on other client machines.

You can do that, but you would not need EyeTV: you'd stream to QuickTime Player or VLC (VideoLAN Client) most likely.

Now, EyeTV can serve its own recordings over a network to other machines--and send them to iPod/iPhone--but that's still content EyeTV itself recorded.

I love my Hybrid and the EyeTV software is an amazing application. I used to be able to get a lot of HD programming through QAM but then my cable provider must have turned that off cause I don't get half of what I used to anymore.

I have completely shutoff my cable and gone to whatever I can get with a nice antenna (OTA). The HDHR seems like a great solution so I record programs and send the feed to my laptops.

The only concern I have is that most OTA channels are digital but not hd. would I be able to get the digital channels?

does anyone else have this cable-less setup?

In the US, over-the-air channels are either analog or digital. Analog channels go away completely in Feb 2009.

I usually only watch TV during prime-time, and in my area, all of the digital OTA channels broadcast their shows in HD.

As far as I know, if it's broadcast in the US OTA, the EyeTV Hybrid should be able to get it and record it.

thanks aristo

I was actually asking about the HDHomeRun. There are some slight differences.

Ah, OK. With OTA, the HomeRun can only do digital channels. (which are the only ones I'd ever watch, but that's just me) .. :)

I really wish there was more competition on the Mac side for TV tuners. I have a Hybrid, and while it works well, there are missing features/glitches that haven't been addressed in a while. Plus, Elgato products are usually much more expensive that comparable Windows products, especially considering the hardware is just rebranded OEM stuff that can be found on the Windows side for much cheaper.

What features are missing? Have you considered the HDHomeRun? Does Elagato ever release updates?

EyeTV has released a number of free software updates with new features (and given me good email support) since I've used it. And one paid update (EyeTV 3) which I haven't bought yet but intend to.

I use OTA only, and yes you can get any DTV (digital TV), whether HD or not. It all looks better than analog in any case! No more snow, ghosts, etc.!

Most channels seem to broadcast mostly in standard-def digital, with certain shows in HD (720p) and a very few (mainly sports) in full 1080i.

I'm thinking of getting a tuner with my tax return..
So would you (anyone) recommend the Elegato EyeTV Hybrid?
I also saw something..a TVbook Pro (miglia)...don't know how good they are...no-one seems to write anything about it!

I'm hoping some of the stuff in my dorm is Clear QAM or else I may have to get an indoor antenna!

post a thread and eyetv hybrid

i joined this site to post a question and can't find out where to go to post a thread so thats my first question. my other question is if someone knows how to correctly connect eyetv hybrid to an HD dvr cable box. I have some recorded shows on my dvr box i would like to import for editing purposes and desperately need help. i am not getting a signal from eyetv with the current hook-up. thanks.

If you are at the top of a forum, you should see the option to start a new thread. Should be a button above the thread titles.

For your second question, ... if your HD DVR has "RF out", I think you can hook up a regular cable-tv type of cable between the HD DVR and the EyeTv. Then set the EyeTV to Channel 3 or Channel 4 (whichever channel your HD DVR outputs on).
