Anybody notice that it won’t work if your laying down and you go to open the phone.

It also does not work if the phone is laying down on its back on a table and you are standing over it trying to use.

Strange thing is if you think your standing over it enough for the camera to read your face, it’s not unless your holding it directly in front of you.

Maybe it’s just me lol. Some observations I’m making having it for a week now. Still Face ID seems well thought out. I use my devices in strange ways, so I gusss it’s me.

It does work in the situations you’ve mentioned. It’s all about the angle/proximity to the phone.

Could be your face muscles which are not that fit and when you are bent over the phone, your face tends to deform due to the fact that your face kinda moves towards the centre and it doesn't have the same shape when standing.... No idea if that makes any sense to you, but it's worth to try and notice if any of that motion has any effect on the "geography" of your face....

Interesting, so what am I doing wrong?

It may not be you are doing anything wrong. When your laying down, your face alters in somewhat in shape and the muscles in your face are more relaxed because your head is compressed against something. Others have had issues when laying down as well with Face ID not unlocking.

Mine will work if flat on table or desk and I am standing/sitting “over it”, I actually quite often use it this way or while it is in my lap and I am looking down at it. It also works when I am laying down.

When it fails, are you typing in the passcode?:

Face ID automatically adapts to changes in your appearance, such as wearing cosmetic makeup or growing facial hair. If there is a more significant change in your appearance, like shaving a full beard, Face ID confirms your identity by using your passcode before it updates your face data. Face ID is designed to work with hats, scarves, glasses, contact lenses, and many sunglasses. Furthermore, it's designed to work indoors, outdoors, and even in total darkness.
