The same thing happened to me with my AT&T iPhone X that I purchased on launch day. Unfortunately for me the FaceID crapped out about 13 months after I purchased the phone.
I only wish it would of stopped working within the 12 month warranty time frame.
I know a lot of people on here are going to say it’s my fault and that is what AppleCare+ is for and your stupid unless you pay for AppleCare. I can understand that to some degree, but I feel differently about that.
When I spend $1,450 for a smartphone from Apple which happens to be a trillion dollar company, frankly I expect their products to last and work as anticipated. I also protect my investments.
What was upsetting to me was the fact that the Apple “Genius” bar employee ran several test to try and diagnose the issue. They obviously checked for water damage and other issues. They had no answer for me. They told me it was indeed a hardware issue and like the poster noted I was told the same- the only remedy was to trade in my phone and purchase an iPhone XS.
So, get this..the day of the Apple event where they unveiled the new phones, etc. I had a problem with my iPhone screen. I had a phone was was effected by the “Ghost Touch” I took my iPhone into the“geniuses” and they replaced my screen out of warranty.

They didn’t even run a diagnostic. They knew right away this issue was common with the iPhone X and installed a new screen which did clear up that issue, but the FaceID is still broken.
It’s unfortunate that Apple doesn’t stand by their products as much as they use to. Anyone else notice this?
I have never had AppleCare and in years past if I had an issue with my phone I would take it to the Apple Store and I would always walk out with a refurbished phone.
So, if you probably wait another 6 months when Apple gets enough complaints on the FaceID or faces some type of class action suit they will come out and quietly issue a press release letting people know they are aware of the problem and will fix it for free. It’s sad, but that’s their business model nowadays.
I’m not one to complain, nor do I feel entitled. I’m the moron without ApppleCare as I stated. However, I know this is a much bigger problem than Apple is letting on. My phone, my brother and my fiancé’s phone all have a non working FaceID.
The main selling point of the iPhone X was the FaceID and the quote Apple gave me to replace it blew my mind.. I want to say it was about $400-$600.
So, the main selling point of their flagship phone and perhaps most expensive component is flawed.
I also emailed Tim Cook, but never heard back. I never expected to.. but, it can’t hurt. What I learned from this is never to buy an iPhone early on & that AppleCare is pretty much a must-buy these days because Apple doesn’t stand by their products. I use to purchase a new iPhone every launch day, but haven’t since the X for this very reason and I many never purchase another Apple product.
The strange thing about the FaceID being broken is that Animoji’s work, portrait photos work, etc.
Who knows, but it’s just left a sour taste in my mouth. Hope everyone is enjoying their new iPhone 11’s I’m really not trying to be a downer.
