If Apple were interested in using (or selling) your data for advertising they would have done it long ago.

I would imagine that Apple is indeed looking at the long game with their face-tracking technology, not for advertising but for Siri to learn and react to facial expressions. This could potentially give them a huge leap ahead in the personal assistant space.

For everyone paranoid, wear the proper sunglasses and tin foil hat and you can't be tracked.

The thread really isn't about paranoia. OP made some great business case points that we don't know how it will turn out but the writing is on the wall. The thing people don't get about privacy is once you give it up, you don't get it back so it's good to question things instead of blindly buying into new tech.

Well the OP does sound a bit paranoid...but you all realize apps can get access to the "Face ID" sensors without using Face ID itself right? How else do you think the Snapchat stuff works with it? And what do you think Snapchat is doing with that data?

What do you think will happen when Facebook adds the same type of overlay and wants access to the sensors? Plus if the sensor is as good as identifying your face from as many angels as it sounds like if Facebook is open it'll be able to identify everyone around if the app is open.

And if it's bad now with just Apple using this just wait until Android manufacturers start using the same tech!

I still don't really know how I feel about all this stuff and where tech is going, but this is obviously where we're headed so we all better get used to it. Apple is obviously the best about this kind of thing and you can try to prioritize privacy as much as you want but there are enough other people in the world with devices that are wide open that you'll be tracked anyways.

I made myself depressed now :(

I love these threads. The ability of the OP to ignore every single sensible post is quite astounding.

Its like the people who pop up to say "well faceID won't work in the dark, look how clever I am". Whats the expression "better to stay quiet and have people think you stupid than speak up and confirm it".

I don't know if this is all part of the current trend for saying something negative to get a reaction without actually thinking about what you are saying for even a second but its getting embarrassing. If you think of something really simple then the likelihood is that someone else or even everyone else has thought about it too.

If you think apple will allow companies to use faceID to track us then you haven't even given a seconds thought to apples policy towards monetising their customers via advertising.

Companies are the absolutely LAST thing you need to worry about with Face ID.

Bad idea all around that no one asked for. NO ONE.

Been chatting with a Siliconvalley old buddy of mine, and he says Apple has done it. Face ID of course it will come eventually to Mac and iPad heck on PC it’s being Marketed to Gamers as a feature called Eye Tracking by Tobii On 144hz Gaming monitors which can tell where on the screen you are looking.

Make no mistake boys and girls. This is not about Security or Gaming. That’s the foot in the door. And how innocent it is. The reality behind the scenes in Silicon Valley and at Apple. Is how to Create Apps that Track what you are Looking at In real time non stop. The implications for advertising and targegeted ads are monumental.

Here’s just a few

A. Employers will have a scoring system based on how engaged workers are they can tell how much you are looking at your screen.
B. Malls will enable Face ID and partner with Apple to give coupons and discounts at kiosks when you look at a poster.
C. Snapchat and Instagram will have features that provide special Filters when you ID your friends. Tagging people is so 2013. Now with Face ID it’s done immediately.

Can’t wait to see what other uses people can come up with.

Here’s a Brief TED talk on what’s being done today wait till they get Face ID profiles and people to opt into these discount cards and link them. Skip to 3:00

Ah, finally another reason to pull my tin foil hat back out of the closet. Apple going into advertising with me, big time. Hilarious.
