Since updating to the latest version of ios11, face id has stopped working altogether. It doesn't even allow me to register a face. Gets stuck on setup screen and eventually says face id is not available. Also a factory reset did not help. Any suggestions other than going through apple?

Did you do a hard reset of your phone? (Not restore)
Ya I did. Attempted plenty. Also attempted two factory resets. No luck. And the phone is getting super hot and battery draining ridiculously fast. Happened after the update. Maybe I can down grade through an iTunes restore? I have the ipsw file.

Sounds like your phone is defective, unfortunately. You're not blocking the faceID sensors with a screen protector, right?

No screen protector and no case. Strange thing is sometimes it won't even recognize my passcode.

Happened to me before update and after update whole phone froze no face recognition or password would pop up just froze. Hard reset fixed it for awhile than again froze. Took it back to Apple last night so they could see it. Lady hard reset started to work again told her I wanted a refund. Which I walked out with my money and went to food court for a Cinnabon with my trusted 6S+.

They didn't offer a replacement?
