When the X came out what we learned was the problems people were having was more of a user learning curve then your phone not doing it properly.

You will eventually acclimate yourself to using FaceID and it will feel seamless and you’ll wonder why you ever thought fingerprint ID was better.

X users now look back at fingerprint ID nostalgically. It’s so dated.

Mine doesn’t work when I’m sucking on my thumb sometimes but it’s amazing. Sounds like you have a dud, just return it

Mine is working fine so far, with or without sunglasses, in the dark, etc. The only thing that bothers me is that I have to hold the phone from specific angles in order to unlock.

You're not wrong. Angles to the left/right are impressive, but angles up/down need to be improved, which I'm sure will happen over time.

Working great on my XS. Very fast and efficient. This is my first experience with Face ID as I came from an IP6. Hardly ever kept my 6 locked because I disliked inputting the password or using Touch ID. Now my phone is never unlocked when not in use.

Anyone else having problems with Face ID on their new XS? It only works well about 50 % of the time. The other 50% its either slow, takes a good 5-6 seconds of moving my face around to open, or it doesn't work at all. Ive reset it and did my face scans a second time out in the daylight and that didn't help. This thing sucks, I want fingerprint ID back.

Take it back. My MAX is near instant no matter if I am wearing my glasses, Sunday glasses or even a hat. It works so fast that I forget what it is doing. Please Apple, hurry and bring FaceID to the new iPads.

I was a bit worried about leaving touch id but I love face ID on my max.

Its fast and have had no fails yet. Works great with all my password, banking and email apps.

All I can suggest is set up an alternative face id as well that is what I have done.

Only negative I have is that apple Pay is easier with touch ID but Face ID works great only have to remember to double tap!

Other things that can improve your FaceID experience.

1) Add an "Alternate Appearance" in FaceID setup with your own face, holding the phone in a different location than where you held it for the first FaceID setup.

The two locations should be similar to the two different positions where you're likely to to hold it when you typically unlock it. The second appearance will capture additional aspects of your face and apple will always try both appearances. This same idea helped many people who were having trouble with TouchID and then used two or more setup fingers, for the same actual finger of their hand.

2) Redo the first setup, moving your face very slowly, and in a broad circle during the process. Think of your nose as a pointer while attempting to draw a large circle with your nose/pointer. And as another poster said, try to do at least one setup "Appearance" with the phone at a distance and location that you most typically hold it when you unlock it.

3) Consider if rooms and places where you're sitting typically have a bright light shining directly into the phone when you unlock it. If that's the case in some locations, it would help, if before unlocking in such a location, you rotate your head and phone so that the light source is approaching the phone from the side, rather than directly.

4) Consider turning OFF "require attention" in the FaceID settings. This will eliminate problems with sunglasses, and problem cases where your timing is slightly off when you look at the phone when unlocking. The only security risk here is that someone could hold the phone to your face to unlock when you're sleeping. If that's not an issue in your circumstances then this is worth a try.

FWIW, It's always worked great for me, but much faster and even more reliable now on the Max
