Once in a while when I wake the phone the face ID asks for passcode to log in instead. It only happens once in a while. Is this a security feature or what?

It is a security feature. It happens I think once every four days, and once after every restart. You may also note that you need the passcode if you want to register finger prints, and to turn passcodes off etc. Apple sees the passcode as the "real" lock to your phone, finger print or Face ID are just for convenience.

Hi,

Why don't you try resetting your Face ID and set it up completely fresh once again? Sometimes the issue could be due to added security reasons. I think it is quite common with most phones with this feature, and not just with iPhones.

This particular opinion is purely based on my knowledge, and the answer I have given is not meant to undermine or contradict others' opinions here!

Yep, it's normal. Sometimes I think it's an annoying security feature, but then I think... oh well I won't forget my passcode if I have to enter it every few days (maybe that is part of the reason they do it?)
