Just got an iphone X last Friday and face ID worked fine and then stopped working so I reset the face ID but the camera cannot detect my face saying it's not focusd or too high/low not close enough etc. Anyway I hard restart the phone and the face id reset is OK again and it works again.......for another day and then this problem starts again. Then I really tried hard to recall what happened and I realised that everytime if I was playing Pokemon Go and did not shut down the app (leaving it in background) and then turned off the phone this problem (ie. face id failure) will happen when I turn the phone on again.

Now I just hard restart the phone and face id will work again! My conclusion is that if GPS is on for a long time it may somehow affect the ability of the true depth camera to detect your face! Has anybody got the same experience? Apple please investigate.
