I got my replacement iPhone X about a week ago due to GPS issues. The new unit also exhibits the same GPS issues but other than that I have been very happy with it.

One of the most unexpected things after a week with the phone: Face ID works every time! It now recognizes me from the very first attempt and lets me unlock almost immediately. This has consistently been the case in bright light and early in the morning in pretty much complete darkness!

Very unlikely to have GPS issues on both of your devices seeing its a hardware thing. Are you sure it’s an issue with the device?

Face ID seems to be working perfectly with a lot of people. I still prefer the convenience of Touch ID.

I typically only use navigation while on foot/on my bike. I am awaiting an update with comments from an Apple engineer, who is supposed to be looking into the problem. I am hopeful that this is not hardware related...

I got a new device as well, returned a 64 for 256, and noticed that the FaceID on my new phone worked much better! Not sure if the launch day phones were a lower quality or what, and that's pure speculation on my part, but my second wave phone seems to have better FaceID.

Maybe you just set it up better the second time?

I set it up several times on the first phone, and had the first phone a whole week. The new phone is markedly better after just the initial setup and less than a week of training.

My first phone would have trouble when I was laying down, at odd angles and rarely worked the first time when head on. With the new phone, it works at all angles, works right when I wake up, and even works when I'm laying down. All with less training.

Just curious, how is Face ID not convenient for you? I find I’m not wiping down my fingers every time I need unlock my phone. Or wiping all the smudges off my home button.

I’m having a blast with Touch ID. Apple nailed it.

I actually agree with the above statement. I had my first phone for about a week and Face ID was pretty rubbish. The replacement (also a week in) works miles better. Weird :D

I unlock my phone on a regular basis while it’s lying on the desk or my sofa while charging. I don’t want to pick it up every time because I might be busy doing something else and my hands are busy or dirty. Only touch of a finger and voila.!

Remember the "rumor" that Apple relaxed the spec on the FaceID components that most here refused to believe ? Maybe it was true after all (just because Apple denied it doesn't make it factual either) and the original phone was on the "loose" end of the specs while the new phone has tighter specs....

I just don’t get this thought. I’m sure then for you Touch ID is better. But I can unlock my phone while it’s laying flat. Do it all the time.

In fact I find a tap to the screen then Touch ID is even easier while multitasking other stuff goin on. But that’s just me.

Woudnt have to pick it up with either scenario.

Red Herring. What happened was you setup Face ID again and it works better than it did before. Anyone with Face ID slowness can experience the exact same thing.

Imagine the phone is not actually in front of you. It’s literally next to you at a height where your face will just not get to see the camera properly.

Except we did set it up again. Multiple times. However, getting the new phones lead to a huge improvement that was not seen from setting it up new.

Or maybe it's just that you set it up properly the second time around.

It's one of those things that we will never know why your original phone/attempts at capturing faceID accurately didn't work when your 2nd did. There's way too many factors involved to nail down a conclusion of any sort.

No one is saying that, simply saying that maybe some phones have less accurate sensors due to manufacturing issues. Is that so hard to believe?
Did you try having someone else set up Face ID on your first phone to see if the issue could be replicated no matter which face was being set up?

Maybe your first phone just didn't take a liking to your face at all...LOL j/k!
