Knowing this mind, even if he were to charge for these services, he will still want to know the brand of inner wear we all wear and the number of teaspoons of sugar we take in our coffee and tea.

These services are now a nuisance in the hands of this guy.

Probably not. But interesting question. I think this forum helped me with specific problems around 10 times over the last 5 years. Never “payed back” by clicking on adds. So what’s that help worth? 10$ in total perhaps. Will happily pay 2$/year for access and the random chance that someone would help me and no adds.

edit: that’s still 2$/year more than MR makes on me today
Imagine an internet with zero advertising. Every site you visit requiring $2 before you can get on.

Having to go through payment details to access any site.

Advertising itself isn’t an issue if non-intrusive, but tracking should be a choice like we will be getting.

I don’t mind being served ads relevant to what I post or view on Facebook. But they shouldn’t be tracking what I do off platform.

The only other option is to pay for services.

Would you come to this forum if you Had to pay for access?

Gladly.

I am not a monetary contributor today. But if they were to paywall the forums, I will pay (depending on if I feel the amount charged is fair price).

MR is one of those forums where, among other things, the leeway provided by moderators is enough to like this space. It has become more toxic of late with people skewering those who differ from their opinions and God forbid those who come and complain about Apple, but over all, this is still a fantastic space to be in.

There are forums here besides the Apple products and ecosystem. The Digital Photography thread, for example, is fantastic.

I would much prefer to pay for valuable service than pay nothing for inviting nuisance and surveillance in my life.

If you have not seen the Creepy Line documentary I recommend it.

It’s about how Google and Facebook use and manipulate there services.

Yes, I see the irony that I am linking to YouTube.

You can sit next to someone, each person do a Google search with the same exact words and get different results based on the profile they built on you.

I honestly like my tiles. They have served me well. I don't need them anymore because I have learned to slow down when I get to home or work and just put everything in its spot.

I will pickup an Airtag or 2. Just for the rare times I need them. Having one less app tracking me is a plus. Apple already knows where I am much of the time so I am okay (kinda) with them knowing where some of my stuff is located.

Eliminating one company with my data is a good thing.

Sadly, I don’t think that will happen. People will begrudgingly pay for it and it will become the new standard practice with all companies. Just you watch…

Actually, thats exactly what we want. An ethical business model, no tracking or privacy invasion.

Facebook would go bump if they tried to charge. To add, this website has 19 trackers on it. When are people going to start the uproar at that? Macrumors so quick to slate Facebook whilst attempting to track us all massively.

When I saw that I decided to check it; my check came up with 36 trackers.

The only other option is to pay for services.

It does not have to be that way, you can still run ads that do no track you or invade your privacy. TV channels and Magazines were doing it for years and they were worth hundreds of millions of dollars. A superbowl ad costs about $5.5Million, it does not track me or invade my privacy.

It does not have to be that way. That video is available on for free on Odysee.com :-

Humanity is fighting back for its privacy, baby steps but it happening. Odysee and PeerTube are free alternatives to YouTube but they work in a different philosophy (I think Odysee is based on blockchain technology, PeerTube is a video serving software you host on your own servers/rented one from data centers)

😂

Nothing like a good overreaction.

You don't want to be advertised to... Facebook, Google etc make most of their money from advertisers. It's really not hard to understand that if advertising becomes less effective on these platforms, FB and Google will make less money so will then need to find that money elsewhere. Advertising is what keeps any platform on the internet free. Full stop.
That's true, but it doesn't negate what you're replying to. Advertisers are fighting for your business, and the one that wins won't necessarily be the one with the best product for you.

Go to Privacy and then tracking. Your settings may prevent them from even being able to ask in the first place.
This is how I’ve got my privacy setting

Mountains out of molehills here, folks. I think what they have written on that screen is very tactful and not pressuring anyone. They simply say it "helps" keep Facebook free, not that "We're depending on you to keep Facebook free."

Is this mandatory? Or can you deny this permission after hitting continue? I think they're honestly getting too big. They need to be governed properly.

Pay a small fee of a few $ per month to remove ads, avoid sponsored content and reduce my data being sold... Sounds good to me. Why not give me the option to pay Facebook?

Because FB is still going to collect and sell your data. Just now you would be paying them to do it.

Creepy? Howso. It’s really convenient when they send me ads that are exactly about the kinds of things that interest me. What’s wrong with that. Ive found lots of useful stuff without even having to search for it.
1. Very creepy to me that I can be talking to my girlfriend, open Facebook and see ads for the stuff we were talking about. I find that extremely creepy, but maybe that’s just me. I don’t want an ad to pop up, I’ll look for it if I want it.
2. Maybe I’m the odd one here but I hate ads, HATE. (Yes I understand that’s how people make money) still hate them. I am actually the type of person that will go out of my way to avoid a seller/product if I am overwhelmed with their ads, I’ll find a competitor.

Talking to your friend using which app? Speaking or typing. That certainly should and pretty much does not happen as they are not allowed access to your microphone unless you allow this. And usually an app will not be requesting microphone use. Most comms apps are encrypted too. If you’re talking about social media then the consumer is the product. You opt in when you agree to use the app.

Facebook will never charge for access, they know very well the majority of their user base will jump.

I won't shed a tear if Facebook dies...

Just remember

Facebook allowed massive amount of misinformation to spread.

Misinformation that killed many thousands of people and scammed many also.

They could have stopped it within two days by taking down the biggest culprits.

ATT is simply going to reduce their revenues and profits, and therefore their power. I use Facebook occasionally but they really need their wings clipped a bit. Their CEO and everyone working for them act like they rule the world. A little bit of humility every now and then never killed anybody.

It is similar to a thief asking "Can you open your door, so that I can come in without making a mess of your property".
